Product Details

What is Oil of Oregano (Carvacrol)?

Oil of oregano, or Origanum oil, is extracted from the oregano plant, also known as Origanum vulgare. This plant belongs to the mint family Labiatae.

Mediterranean in origin, oregano is used widely across the world as a spice and for the health benefits* it provides.

It is important not to confuse oil of oregano with the common variety used as an ingredient and flavoring for recipes. Common oregano is usually Origanum marjoram, while true oil of oregano is extracted from the Origanum vulgare plant. In selecting a dietary supplement, be sure to verify the plant origin.

Oregano is rich in antioxidant activity, giving cell membranes in the body protection against free radical compounds. Two key compounds found in the oil are carvacrol and thymol, believed to be the main sources of its benefits.

Oil of oregano contains many other minerals or vitamins, such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, niacin, beta carotene, potassium, manganese, and copper.

Purity and Concentration of Oil of Oregano (Carvacrol)

This is true Wild-Grown Mediterranean Oil of Oregano, imported directly from Turkey, where it is cold pressed and steam distilled from the leaves and branches of the plant. This essential oil has a yellowish to reddish-yellow color and a characteristic spicy odor. It is insoluble in water, but is soluble in alcohol and carrier oils. This product is free of any fillers, "buffering" agents or other additives.

CAUTION! Pure oil of oregano is very caustic and will burn or irritate tissues! Always dilute before use.

Potential Side Effects of Oil of Oregano (Carvacrol)

While oregano oil has many benefits, there are a few possible side effects which may include reducing the bodys ability to absorb iron. Therefore, it is recommended that any regular use be combined with regular consumption of iron supplements. Those who have allergies to thyme, basil, mint or sage may be sensitive to oil of oregano as well, since oregano is in the same family of plants. If any skin irritation, rashes or vomiting occurs, discontinue use and consult a physician. This product is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.

How should I store it?

Store only in glass containers. For best results, refrigerate after opening.
