Product Details

What is Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR)?

Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetylated form of L-carnitine, derived from the amino acids lysine and methionine, and is naturally produced in the liver and kidneys. The human body uses acetyl l-carnitine to breakdown fatty acid to create energy by transporting fatty acids across the mitochondria membrane. The highest levels of ALCAR are found in tissues that use fatty acids as their main fuel, namely the skeletal and cardiac muscles. Several health conditions and medications reduce carnitine levels in the body. Without adequate carnitine, waste products can buildup in the cells and degrade health. ALCAR supplements can help restore carnitine levels and exert several benefits.

Potential Acetyl L-Carnitine Benefits

Acetyl L-Carnitine is a nootropic that may enhance cognitive function and act as a neuroprotective agent. ALCAR helps protect the brain from age-related decline and improves learning markers in the brain. ALCAR supplements also enhance general brain function in adults and can reduce mental fatigue. ALCAR may boost mood as well by enabling the production of acetylcholine, GABA, and glutamate. These neurotransmitters are crucial for overall mental health.

ALCAR is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing it to act as a powerful antioxidant. In addition to providing neuroprotection, ALCAR supplements support heart health. ALCAR’s antioxidant properties protect the heart from oxidative stress, reduce inflammation markers, and help regulate lipids.

Acetyl L-Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring antioxidant enzyme and an important mitochondrial component. Acetyl L-Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic Acid work synergistically to produce greater benefits than either supplement can achieve by itself. The combination of acetyl l-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid provide impressive nootropic properties, such as enhanced cognitive function, memory, and mental acuity.

Acetyl l-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid synergize to improve exercise performance in two ways. First, it may increase glucose transport to muscle, particularly because exercise is associated with a high degree of oxidative stress. Secondly, ALA and ALCAR may synergize to increase fatty acid utilization and cellular energy production.

Purebulk offers a blended product of ALCAR/ALA capsules with 500mg of ALCAR and 200mg ALA. Since ALA powder has an unpleasant chemical burning taste, we use capsules for this blended product.

Acetyl L-Carnitine vs NAC

Like ALCAR, n-acetyl l-cysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant derived from amino acids. Both have neuroprotective properties and synergize to protect DNA from damage. Both antioxidants can improve exercise performance. NAC helps reduce fatigue in athletes, delays exercise fatigue, and reduces inflammation cause by exercise. ALCAR improves aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance, reduces the effects of muscle damage markers, enhances oxygen uptake, and increases CO2 production.

Potential Side Effects of Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

Acetyl l-carnitine is generally safe. Side effects are unlikely and rare when taking typical serving sizes. In large amounts, adverse side effects such as increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, and diarrhea are possible. Side effects may include headache, restlessness, and mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps. Persons with a history of seizures should not use this product.

Bioavailability, Mixing, and Solubility of ALCAR Powder

ALCAR powder dissolves quickly in water and has a moderately sour but pleasing taste that mixes well with citrus drinks like lemonade. Mix the product with a citrus juice or dissolve in water and drink.
