Biotin is the common name for vitamin B7, a water-soluble essential vitamin. It is a cofactor to several carboxylase enzymes responsible for synthesizing fatty acids and producing glucose for energy. Biotin is also a critical for metabolizing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It plays a role in aesthetics as well, as it supports hair, skin, and nail health.
A properly balanced diet can provide adequate biotin. Food sources of biotin include liver, egg yolk, cereals, legumes and nuts. It is relatively stable in heat, light, and oxygen. However, food-processing techniques such as high heat can destroy biotin. As a result, less-processed versions of fresh foods will yield more biotin and subsequent health benefits.
The name biotin originates from the Greek word bios, which means “to live.” Scientists initially referred to it as Vitamin H, which is a reference to the German word for skin, haut. Biotin 1% is a blended product of biotin and mannitol. Pure biotin requires a very small dose, which can be difficult to measure without a milligram scale. Biotin 1% is easier to measure, and mannitol prevents the biotin powder from caking.
Biotin helps in the synthesis of fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose. Biotin is also utilized to manufacture intracellular carboxylase enzymes, making it essential for the normal growth and health of skin and hair.
The primary role of biotin lies in its ability to metabolize fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Biotin is a vital cofactor for several enzymes involved in energy metabolism. Biotin also helps the body produce and utilize blood sugar (glucose) for its energy needs.
Biotin supports the building blocks of keratin proteins, the primary components of hair, skin, and nail cells. Studies have shown biotin can improve hair growth and reduce hair shedding. Biotin also improves the overall quality of hair. Biotin is excellent at hydrating the skin and may improve its smoothness. Biotin is also effective at strengthening brittle nails by increasing the thickness and reducing nail splitting.
Symptoms of biotin deficiency include hair loss, red scaly rash around the eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. Neurological symptoms of biotin deficiency may also include depression, lethargy, hallucinations, and numbness of the extremities. The characteristic facial rash is referred to as the "biotin deficient face" by some clinical practitioners.
Consuming raw egg whites can cause a biotin deficiency, as uncooked egg whites contain a protein that binds to biotin and prevents its absorption. Long-term antibiotic use can interfere with biotin production in the intestine and increase the risk of deficiency symptoms. Long-term use of anti-seizure medications may also lead to biotin deficiency.
This pharmaceutical grade vitamin Biotin 1% is a blended product of 1% Biotin USP and 99% Mannitol. Store it in a cool, dry, and dark place.
Symptoms, problems, toxicity, and side effects of biotin overuse are very rare. As with other water-soluble B-vitamins, excess biotin is excreted in the urine.
Biotin 1% has a pleasantly sweet taste due to the carrier mannitol, a low-calorie sugar substitute. Biotin 1% dissolves easily in water, juice, coffee, or your own favorite!
Biotin works best when combined with other B vitamins.
