What is Glucuronolactone Powder?

Glucuronolactone is a natural component found in most connective tissues, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. It’s also essential to synthesize chondroitin sulfate—a compound that promotes joint health. Glucuronolactone converts into glucuronic acid, which helps produce amino acids, fatty acids, and DNA components by breaking down and detoxing glucose. Glucuronolactone may support liver health and cognitive function. It’s a common ingredient in sports and energy drinks, as it boosts energy and enhances athletic performance. The body can synthesize glucuronolactone in the liver by breaking down glucose. However, it can only produce small amounts at a time.

Potential Glucuronolactone Benefits

Glucuronolactone and Exercise Performance

Sports and energy drinks often include glucuronolactone for its ability to boost energy and enhance athleticism. Studies examining these beverages noted improvements in aerobic, anaerobic, and physical endurance. Participants experienced dramatic improvements in sustaining their max heart rate and their max speed while cycling. Researchers believe glucuronolactone acts as an additional energy source during intense physical activity. It also helps prevent exercise fatigue by attenuating the effects of energy depletion. Glucuronolactone may help build lean muscle. It synergizes with other pre-workout supplements to increase the number of repetitions individuals can perform during resistance training and boost their power output.

Glucuronolactone and Cognitive Function

Glucuronolactone may benefit cognitive performance in addition to enhancing athleticism. Researchers noted that energy drinks containing glucuronolactone dramatically improved participants’ choice reaction time, concentration, and memory recall. Participants also experienced an increase in mental alertness. Other studies have noted reductions in mental strain and improvements in attention.

Glucuronolactone and Resveratrol

Taking glucuronolactone with resveratrol may support heart health. D-glucaro-1,4-lactone has antioxidant properties and synergizes with resveratrol to protect blood vessels against free radicals. Glucuronolactone is also an anti-platelet compound.

Glucuronolactone and Liver Health

Glucuronolactone may support liver health by binding to environmental toxins and cell-damaging molecules. It helps detoxify these compounds by enhancing their solubility, reducing their toxicity, and facilitating their faster excretion. Glucuronolactone also breaks down into D-glucaro-1,4-lactone. D-glucaro-1,4-lactone inhibits beta-glucuronidase enzymes from slowing the detox process. It also reduces inflammation and markers of liver injury.

Potential Glucuronolactone Side Effects

Individuals that primarily consume glucuronolactone through energy drinks may experience side effects due to the other ingredients in the beverage. Many energy drinks contain caffeine and can lead to headaches, stomach upset, and sleep disruption if individuals consume too much of it. Most individuals tolerate glucuronolactone supplements well.
