Product Details

What is Green Coffee Bean Extract?

Green coffee bean extract comes from unroasted green coffee beans. It contains chlorogenic acid, an ester of caffeic and quinic acid. Although the name includes chloro-, chlorogenic acid does not contain chlorine. The name derives from the Greek words khloros and ghenos, meaning light green and giving rise to, respectively. It’s a direct reference to the green color chlorogenic acid produces when oxidized.

What is Chlorogenic Acid?

PureBulk's green coffee bean extract contains 50% chlorogenic acid at minimum. Chlorogenic acid is the primary beneficial compound in green coffee bean extract. It’s a versatile antioxidant that may support weight loss efforts, heart health, liver health, and the immune system. Some foods contain chlorogenic acid, including apples, blueberries, pears, strawberries, and tomatoes. However, green coffee bean extract is the richest natural source of chlorogenic acid.

Potential Green Coffee Bean Extract Benefits

Green Coffee Bean Extract Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Green coffee bean extract is a rich source of chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant and free radical scavenger with anti-inflammatory properties. It protects cells by reducing the production of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species (ROSs). It also increases the availability of other notable antioxidants, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH). Additionally, chlorogenic acid exerts neuroprotective effects and stimulates the central nervous system.

Green Coffee Bean Extract for Weight Loss

Green coffee bean extract may support weight loss by influencing how the body metabolizes carbohydrates. It reduces how much glucose and carbohydrates the body absorbs during digestion by inhibiting alpha-glucosidase enzymes. It also inhibits fat absorption and production while simultaneously increasing fat breakdown. It may further support fat loss by promoting thermogenesis (calories burned through body heat) via the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha). Chlorogenic acid’s antioxidant properties also inhibit new fat cells from proliferating.

Green Coffee Bean Extract and Heart Health

Chlorogenic acid has numerous properties that may support heart health. It acts as a cholesterol-reducing (hypocholesterolemic) agent that can improve triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels. It achieves this by altering how the body metabolizes amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids and inhibiting the enzymes that produce cholesterol. Several studies have found that it also positively affects blood pressure by inhibiting the enzymes that produce blood pressure-raising hormones.

Green Coffee Bean Extract and Liver Health

Green coffee bean extract has hepatoprotective properties that may support liver health. Animal studies show that chlorogenic acid protects the liver against injuries caused by chemicals and lipopolysaccharides. Lipopolysaccharides are bacterial toxins that trigger the immune system and cause fevers.

Green Coffee Bean Extract and the Immune System

Green coffee bean extract may support the immune system in several ways. In addition to protecting against lipopolysaccharides, chlorogenic acid has additional antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties. It increases the production of genes that activate the immune system. Chlorogenic acid also enhances the proliferation and activation of numerous white blood cells, including macrophages, natural killer cells, and T-cells.

Potential Green Coffee Bean Extract Side Effects

Most individuals can take green coffee bean extract without experiencing adverse effects. Green coffee bean extract contains caffeine and may cause similar side effects, such as jitters, upset stomach, and bowel urgency. However, green coffee beans are only about one-third the potency of pure caffeine. PureBulk’s green coffee bean extract is less than 20% caffeine. Individuals with coffee bean allergies should not take this supplement.
