Rutin is a glycoside of the flavonol quercetin bound to a rutinose sugar. Rutin goes by many names, including rutoside, quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, and sophorin. It is a citrus flavonoid found in many plants and foods, including olives, buckwheat, asparagus, apples, many citrus fruits, and green and black tea infusions. Like quercetin, rutin supports a healthy inflammation response and has antioxidant properties.
PureBulk's Rutin powder is derived from the pagoda tree (Sophora japonica) and is standardized to contain more than 95% rutin by weight.
The word flavonoid is a derivative of the Latin word flavus, meaning yellow. As reflected by their namesake, flavonoids are responsible for many plant pigments. Rutin belongs to a class of flavonoids known as flavonols and is a type of anthoxanthin. Anthoxanthins are flavonoid pigments with antioxidant properties.
Like all flavanols, rutin has antioxidant properties. Research shows that rutin is an effective free radical scavenger. It converts free radicals into stable and nonreactive species by donating electrons. It also reduces oxidative stress by inhibiting the enzymes that produce reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Oxidative damage can occur when free radicals like ROSs outnumber antioxidants. Long-term exposure to oxidative stress and free radical damage can worsen or catalyze numerous diseases. Animal studies found that rutin boosts the activity of other antioxidants. Rutin also protects against UV ray damage and has neuroprotective properties.
Rutin has several properties that support heart health. Rutin can improve blood circulation by strengthening and increasing blood vessel flexibility. One study found that rutin may help individuals achieve optimal LDL cholesterol, as participants experienced a decrease in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Research also shows that rutin enhances overall cardiovascular health.
Rutin may support joint and bone health by increasing the expression of collagen type I. Type I is the most abundant form of collagen found in the human body. Bones need collagen to maintain their structural integrity and strength. Studies note that collagen improves joint health by reducing pain and deterioration.
Most individuals can take rutin supplements without experiencing adverse effects, as rutin is a natural compound found in many foods. Some individuals may experience an upset stomach or headaches.
