Directions:  As a dietary supplement, take 700 mg (3/16 tsp) up to three times daily on an empty stomach, or as directed by a physician. Accurate gram weight scale recommended.

What is Arginine?

L-arginine base powder is a free form of L-arginine, an amino acid that is a component in many proteins. It is a central part of the urea cycle, a process that allows the body to dispose of excess ammonia. Arginine is also the precursor to creatine, glutamate (the precursor to glutamine), and proline. Arginine is usually a non-essential amino acid, as the body can synthesize it from citrulline. However, it can become semi-essential while recovering from injuries or in individuals with kidney or intestinal disorders.

PureBulk derives this l-arginine base powder from glucose via molasses sugar. It is vegan- and vegetarian-friendly.

L-Arginine and the Urea Cycle

Ammonia is a toxic substance that the body must eliminate by converting it into glutamine via glutamate or through the urea cycle. Arginine plays a key role regardless, as it’s a precursor to glutamate and actively participates in the urea cycle.

Ammonia must first convert into carbamoyl phosphate before it can enter the cycle. The carbamoyl phosphate then transfers a phosphate group to ornithine to convert into citrulline. From there, the citrulline converts into argininosuccinate, which produces arginine when broken down. Arginase enzymes begin the last step of the cycle by cleaving arginine to form ornithine and urea. The ornithine can then return to the start of the cycle while the body excretes the urea through the urine.

Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects from standard doses, such as bloating, stomach pain, or nausea. Arginine may interact with certain medications and medical conditions. Individuals with kidney or liver disease or those taking blood pressure medication should consult a physician before taking arginine supplements. Individuals recovering from a recent heart attack should not take arginine supplements.
