Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a role in more than 300 enzymatic functions and facilitates DNA transcription into RNA. It is one of the most abundant trace metals, second only to iron. Zinc is present everywhere in the body, but the majority exists in the brain, kidneys, liver, parts of the eye, bones, and muscles.
Zinc L-Aspartate is an ionic zinc salt bonded to the amino acid L-aspartic acid in the form of L-aspartate. Aspartic acid is a metabolic intermediate in several biochemical pathways in the body, including the tricarboxylic acid and urea cycles. Combining zinc with aspartic acid enhances its bioavailability and absorption.
Hundreds of enzymes require zinc to function, including those involved in protein synthesis, cell growth, the immune system, wound healing, and more. It also helps mediate communication between cells by converting extracellular stimuli into intracellular signals. Although zinc is essential to sustain human life, the body can’t innately produce it. Some nutritional zinc sources include red meat, chicken, pork, oysters, crabs, and lobsters. Vegans and vegetarians can get their zinc from whole grains, beans, seeds, and nuts.
Roughly one-third of the world’s population doesn’t consume enough zinc to meet basic nutritional needs. As a result, zinc deficiencies are ubiquitous worldwide, affecting over 2 billion people. Further illustrating the point, one-fourth of the population has an elevated risk of developing one. The following are several zinc deficiency symptoms:
Zinc l-aspartate can help bridge nutritional gaps to ensure individuals consume enough of this essential mineral. Zinc l-aspartate may also provide several other benefits.
A significant body of research supports zinc’s beneficial effects on the immune system. Unsurprisingly, it is a common ingredient in supplement blends for the immune system. It supports the immune system by exerting antioxidant and anti-viral effects in the body, such as scavenging free radicals and preventing viral replication. According to several studies, zinc’s most notable immunomodulatory effects relate to respiratory health. Five studies found that zinc lozenges reduced the duration of the common cold in participants by 33%. Two additional studies reported similar findings, with a 35% reduction in duration in comparison to placebos.
Zinc supports the skin barrier and may help acne-prone individuals. Studies show that individuals without acne have sufficient zinc levels, whereas people with acne lesions typically don’t. Insufficient zinc also boosts androgen production. Androgens bind to sebaceous glands to increase sebum levels. The skin produces sebum to retain moisture; however, an overproduction causes noticeably oilier skin and often leads to acne breakouts. Hormonal acne is also frequently the result of an excess of androgens.
PureBulk’s zinc l-aspartate is 21.25% zinc by weight. A 160mg serving yields 34mg of zinc. For accurate measurement, use a milligram scale.
Zinc l-aspartate doesn’t typically cause side effects when taken in appropriate amounts. Exceeding the recommended upper limit can result in nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, or diarrhea. Overconsuming zinc can also inhibit copper absorption. Zinc may reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics or penicillamine when taken at the same time. Individuals can wait at least two hours before or after taking the medication to take zinc to avoid this issue.
