Product Details

What is Zinc Bis-Glycinate?

Zinc is an essential mineral for human life and the second most abundant trace metal. It’s critical for more than 300 enzymes to function and for transcribing DNA into RNA. Zinc exists throughout the entire body, but the highest concentrations exist in the brain, liver, kidneys, parts of the eye, muscles, and bones.

Zinc bis-glycinate is a chelated form of zinc that consists of one zinc molecule bound to two glycine molecules. As an amino acid chelate, it offers superior bioavailability than other forms of zinc and is 20% zinc by weight.

What Does Zinc Do for The Body?

The body can’t produce zinc and must obtain zinc from nutritional sources. Some of the most zinc-rich foods include poultry, red meat, and oysters. Whole grains, beans, and nuts are good vegan- and vegetarian-friendly zinc sources. Zinc is critical for hundreds of enzymatic functions that influence cell growth, protein synthesis, healing, the immune system, and more. It also facilitates communication between cells by converting extracellular stimuli into intracellular signals.

Zinc Deficiency Symptoms

Zinc deficiencies are common, as almost one-third of the population doesn’t get enough zinc from their diets. Over 2 billion people worldwide suffer from zinc deficiencies, and a quarter of them are at risk of developing one. Some of the most common zinc deficiency symptoms include:

  • Wounds that are slow or refuse to heal
  • Diminished sense of taste and smell
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Lack of alertness

Taking zinc supplements can address these deficiencies. However, they can also provide several benefits.

Potential Zinc Benefits

Zinc and Quercetin

The antioxidant quercetin synergizes with zinc to produce superior anti-viral effects. Quercetin also facilitates zinc transport across lipid barriers, which boosts overall zinc levels.

Zinc for Immune System

Extensive research has established zinc’s influence on the immune system, which is why it features in most immune support supplement blends. It has antioxidant and anti-viral properties that support immune function. Numerous studies show that it’s particularly effective at bolstering respiratory health. Most notably, five scientific trials found that participants taking zinc lozenges had a 33% shorter duration of the common cold by 33% and two others reported a 35% reduction compared to the placebo groups.

Potential Zinc Benefits for Skin

The body needs zinc to maintain a healthy skin barrier. Zinc also influences acne in several ways. Researchers have found that people struggling with acne typically have lower zinc levels than individuals with no acne lesions. Taking zinc supplements may decrease the number of bumps and inflammation caused by acne. Low serum levels of zinc can result in an uptick in androgen production, which influence sebum production and sebaceous glands. Sebum is a natural response to retain skin moisture, but too much causes skin to appear oily and can trigger acne breakouts. Raised androgen levels are also a common cause of hormonal acne.

Zinc Bis-Glycinate Dosage

PureBulk’s zinc bis-glycinate supplement powder is 20% zinc by weight. A 200mg serving yields 40mg of zinc. Use a milligram scale to achieve an accurate measurement.

Potential Zinc Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon when taking zinc bis-glycinate supplements. Consuming more than the recommended upper limit may result in digestive side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, or diarrhea. Do not take zinc at the same time as an antibiotic, as it may reduce its effectiveness.
