Cissus quadrangularis is a plant that belongs to the grape family. It has many names, including veldt grape, adamant creeper, winged treebine, and devil’s backbone. It is often considered an ayurvedic supplement, but it grows in many locations was a frequent feature in several folk remedies. Ayurvedic cultures used cissus quadrangularis to mend broken bones and injured tendons and ligaments. Indian cultures used cissus quadrangularis as a Siddha remedy for pain relief and healing broken bones. It earned the name asthisamharaka, meaning that which prevents the destruction of bones, and hadjod. Several other cultures relied on cissus quadrangularis for bone fractures, including the Assamese and Garo people of Meghalaya and Bangladesh.
It is a potent antioxidant that may support joint health, enhance exercise recovery, and support healthy weight management.
Free radicals are a normal part of numerous biological processes, but they cause oxidative stress when they outnumber antioxidants. That stress results in oxidative damage that worsens or promotes the development of many chronic illnesses and induces premature aging. Cissus quadrangularis is rich in antioxidant compounds, including ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carotenoids, phenols, resveratrol, quercetin, and vitamin E. It exerts powerful antioxidant effects by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting free radical and lipid peroxide production. Research shows it also effectively reverses the damaging effects of free radicals by increasing antioxidant activity.
Cissus quadrangularis has a long history as a supplement for joint support. Modern research confirms that cissus promotes bone health in several ways. One study found that cissus quadrangularis expedited bone fracture recovery. A larger study lasting three months noted that cissus quadrangularis fostered better bone fracture healing by increasing the proteins the body needs to form bones.
Other clinical trials examined cissus quadrangularis’ effects on joint pain and swelling. Research shows that cissus quadrangularis reduces the swelling and pain caused by fractured bones. It has also proven effective at reducing chronic joint pain and swelling in animal studies. Researchers believe this is because cissus quadrangularis decreases numerous inflammation markers.
Cissus quadrangularis has several effects that support fat loss and weight loss efforts. Researchers believe cissus helps achieve weight loss by suppressing appetite, reducing food consumption, and interacting with enzymes that digest fats and sugar. Cissus synergizes with several other supplements to induce weight loss and fat loss while also reducing waist circumference, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol.
One study found that participants taking a formula containing cissus quadrangularis, green tea extract with caffeine, and other vitamins experienced a decrease in weight and belly fat, regardless of their diets. The cissus quadrangularis blend also improved participants’ total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
Another study reported that cissus quadrangularis synergizes with African mango extract to significantly improve fat loss and weight loss compared to a placebo. Participants taking cissus quadrangularis with African mango extract lost 4kg of body weight, whereas the placebo group did not experience any weight loss. By the end of the 10-week trial, the cissus quadrangularis and African mango group lost nearly 12kg of body weight and just over 20% of their starting body fat.
Strenuous or high-impact exercise puts a lot of stress on joints. Cissus may improve recovery after workouts by reducing exercise-induced joint pain and inflammation. One eight-week study reported that exercise-trained men taking cissus quadrangularis experienced a 31% reduction in joint pain and impairment.
Most individuals tolerate cissus quadrangularis supplements well. Some may experience mild side effects, such as dry mouth, gas, headache, sleep disruption, or diarrhea. Individuals taking diabetes medication should consult a physician before taking cissus quadrangularis extract, as it may lower blood sugar levels.
