Product Details

What is Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in the body. It’s 34% sulfur by weight, and it is an oxidized derivative of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Some dietary sources of MSM include green vegetables, milk, fish, and grains. MSM powder is white, odorless, and water-soluble.

Methylsulfonylmethane is in the fluid and tissues of all living organisms. MSM supplements have promising potential as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound. It’s ability to support joint health is comparable to glucosamine sulfate.

Potential Benefits of MSM

Sulfur is needed for the structure of every cell in the body. Hormones, enzymes, antibodies, and antioxidants all depend on it. It’s necessary to build and repair DNA. It also protects cells against oxidative free radical damage. The body uses sulfur ubiquitously, and it needs frequent replenishment for optimal nutrition.

As one of the most abundant elements in all living organisms, sulfur is found in more than 150 types of bodily compounds, from enzymes and tissues to hormones and antioxidants. It's also a component of structural protein found in hair, skin, and joints. Although MSM is found in the normal human diet, food processing can destroy it. Shipping and storing food also eliminate MSM. MSM bonds readily with moisture, and it is lost when dehydration occurs.

MSM Powder and Joint Health

Like Glucosamine and Chondroitin, MSM provides raw materials the body needs. Sulphur is present in cartilage, and low sulfur levels can cause joint problems. Sulfur occurs in connective tissue and is in a key structural component for collagen synthesis, which helps form cartilage. Taking MSM supplements provides the body with much needed sulfur to prevent cartilage breakdown. MSM supplements can also reduce inflammation in joints by preventing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

MSM Powder and Antioxidants

MSM’s anti-inflammatory properties also prevent the expression of cell-damaging proteins. It also significantly increases levels of glutathione, one of the most potent and important antioxidants found in the body. Glutathione protects cells from oxidative stress and may reduce the body’s immunological response from overreacting and harming its own cells. Glutathione also protects mitochondria by scavenging free radicals.

MSM is a penetrant and permeability enhancer. It helps transport other compounds that can’t easily cross through cell membranes, making it easier to get rid of toxins and absorb nutrients. MSM may also shorten recovery time after exercise by reducing inflammation and damaging oxidative stress. It may reduce pain from intense exercise as well.

Purity and Concentration of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

This pharmaceutical grade methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) powder contains no fillers, taste additives, or anti-caking agents.

Potential Side Effects of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

Most individuals can take MSM supplements without experiencing any side effects. MSM is rated as one of the least toxic substances in biology and medicine, comparable to water. The Oregon Health Science University in Portland, Oregon has conducted more than 30 years’ worth of studies on MSM supplements.

MSM powder is inert by nature, non-allergenic, non-pyretic, and does not interfere with pharmacological effects. MSM may have a mild blood-thinning effect. Persons taking blood-thinning medication should consult with their doctor before using MSM as a nutritional supplement. Also, though generally a desired effect, MSM may cause hair and fingernails to grow at a faster rate.
