What is DL-Methionine?

DL-methionine is a combination of the biologically active L-methionine and its optical isomer, D-methionine. D-methionine is not proteogenic, unlike L-methionine; however, DL-methionine is less expensive to manufacture than isometrically pure L-methionine.

L-methionine is an essential amino acid and a main component in structural proteins. It contains sulfur and serves as a methyl donor in biochemical reactions. Methionine is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of L-cysteine, L-carnitine, taurine, lecithin, phosphatidylcholine, and other phospholipids, as well as the enzymatic cosubstrate S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). Because L-methionine is an essential amino acid, it is not synthesized in the human body and must be supplied by dietary intake or supplementation.

L-methionine supplements, such as DL-methionine, are necessary for supporting healthy metabolic, central nervous, and immune system functions. As a proteinogenic amino acid, L-methionine plays a role in protein synthesis, which is essential for repairing muscles after vigorous workouts. Methionine is also a critical sulfur source for DNA synthesis and for cells to function properly. The food and beverage industry uses DL-methionine as a nutritional supplement to provide dietary methionine, a flavoring agent, and to enrich vegetable oil.

Potential DL-Methionine Benefits

Methionine is a highly versatile amino acid that supports numerous bodily functions. It helps synthesize numerous amino acids, amino acid derivatives, and essential fats and converts easily into s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). SAMe plays a role in energy production as it can synthesize creatine. The body needs creatine to replenish the phosphate group on adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which it then uses to power cellular processes. SAMe is also a methyl donor for protein molecules and DNA.

Methionine and Antioxidants

Methionine supports the body’s antioxidant activity by producing cysteine, which converts into taurine and glutathione. Glutathione is an essential antioxidant that bolsters the immune system to fight off invading pathogens and toxins. It also increases the availability of other antioxidants and protects the body against oxidative stress, which directly reduces oxidative damage.

Methionine and Detoxification

Methionine contains sulfur, which the body requires for many of its detox processes and provides protection against pollutants. Methionine also positively influences selenium and zinc absorption and uptake, both of which synergize for enhanced DNA protection and repair. Methionine also binds to and chelates heavy metals, making it easier for the body to excrete them. It’s also effective for attenuating copper toxicity and is an antidote to acetaminophen poisoning. Additionally, it plays a lipotropic role by inhibiting fat buildup in the liver.

Methionine for Hair, Skin, and Nails

Sulfur is an essential component for healthy hair, skin, and nails. Sulfur-containing compounds like methionine may produce better skin tone, more pliable hair, and stronger nails. Sulfur compounds also help regulate ammonia, which stimulates hair growth. Additionally, the keratin proteins in the hair are rich in sulfur and are critical for hair strength and elasticity.

Potential DL-Methionine Side Effects

Standard DL-methionine doses don’t typically produce significant side effects. However, individuals may experience headaches, nausea, or vomiting with high doses. Extreme doses can result in more dangerous health effects, such as elevated white blood cell count, increased calcium excretion, and altered levels of potassium and pH in the blood. B vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12, may cause an increase in homocysteine levels.
