Product Details

What is L-Methionine?

Methionine is an essential amino acid and a precursor to several other amino acids, such as cysteine and taurine. It’s also a precursor to SAMe and the powerful antioxidant glutathione. One of methionine’s primary functions is to convert into sulfuric molecules and produce other sulfur-containing compounds. The body needs these sulfur-containing molecules for proper cell function and DNA synthesis. Methionine is also essential for protein synthesis, particularly after strenuous workouts that damage the muscles.

Potential Methionine Benefits

Methionine is one of the nine essential amino acids that the body needs to sustain life. However, humans can’t synthesize it and rely on dietary sources to meet their nutritional needs. Methionine is one of the most versatile amino acids. For example, it converts readily into s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). SAMe helps synthesize creatine, which is critical for producing cellular energy. SAMe can also donate methyl groups to DNA and protein molecules. Methionine can also convert into carnitine, lecithin, and phosphatidylcholine.

Methionine and Antioxidants

Methionine performs a diverse array of functions in the body. However, the most important is its ability to produce other vital molecules, such as cysteine. From there, cysteine can produce taurine and glutathione. Glutathione is the most powerful antioxidant in the body and supports the natural immune system’s defenses against toxins and pathogens. It also boosts the levels of other antioxidants, enhances the body's resistance to oxidative stress, and reduces oxidative damage.

Methionine and Detoxification

Methionine assists with many detoxification processes due to its sulfur contents. It protects cells against pollutants and improves selenium and zinc bioavailability and uptake. Selenium and zinc work together to repair and protect DNA. Methionine is also a chelating agent that helps the body excrete heavy metals like mercury and lead by binding to them. It helps attenuate copper toxicity as well. It also has lipotropic properties that help prevent fat accumulation in the liver. Additionally, methionine is a known antidote to acetaminophen poisoning.

Methionine for Hair, Skin, and Nail Health

Methionine is the body’s primary sulfur supplier, which is critical for hair, skin, and nail health. Specifically, it improves skin tone, hair pliability, and nail strength. It also influences hair follicles and stimulates hair growth by regulating ammonia.

Potential Methionine Side Effects

Most individuals tolerate standard methionine doses with significant adverse effects. However, high doses may cause headaches, nausea, or vomiting. Excessive doses can cause more concerning side effects, such as changing serum pH and potassium levels, raising white blood cell count, and increasing calcium excretion. Methionine may increase homocysteine levels in individuals with B vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12.
